Help kids like Benji fulfil their potential

Help kids like Benji achieve their potential

We need to help disadvantaged kids fulfil their potential when they’re identified for opportunities to play at a higher level.

Kids from low-income welfare-dependent families miss out on a lot in life, and when they’re singled out for a potentially life-changing opportunity to play at a representative level, it can be soul-destroying when they have to turn it down.

With your help we can change this.

The following example shows the importance of this funding, and although the name has been changed to protect the identify of the child, the situation is very real:

Benji’s dream came true one day when he was selected to play Basketball at representative (rep) level. He was so excited. He excelled playing for his domestic team, and now he was going to be able to play at the next level. He couldn’t contain his excitement, but a sinking feeling soon set in as he realised that he wasn’t going to be able to take them up on their offer.

Basketball

Thanks to TeamSports4All he loved playing basketball, it was something he always looked forward to. When he wasn’t playing matches he was training with his club, and when he wasn’t training, he was practicing.

So when he was told he had a place on the rep team, he couldn’t believe it. In addition to playing with some of the best players around, he would get to play in tournaments where talent scouts look for rising stars that can change the entire trajectory of their lives.

But he knew his family couldn’t afford the fees. He almost didn’t tell them as he knew they’d feel like they were letting him down.

While there is some support for state and elite level sport, for these representative teams there isn’t any financial assistance available to kids like Benji. The challenge is the registration, uniforms, and fees for weekly tournaments means that the cost for playing rep can get up around $1,500. Thankfully on this occasion, TeamSports4All were able to find a one-off sponsor who offered to pay for him to play on the rep team, knowing how much it would mean to Benji. The experience changed his life, and Benji now has his sights on playing for his state, and even professionally.

Unfortunately there are more kids like Benji, who will miss out if we can’t arrange funding for them. While TS4A funds disadvantaged kids to play club/grassroots sport, and other charitable programs may help fund some kids to play at State level, there is a funding gap that sees disadvantaged kids missing out at Rep level due to no organisations solving the funding problem for them.

The trial program would enable a small group of children to play rep level, with all their registration fees, uniforms and equipment paid for. With your support we are aiming to help 12 more kids like Benji so they don’t miss out.

  • $1,500 will give a child everything they need to play rep level, pay their fees, give them their uniform and make sure they fit in with everyone else.
  • $1,000 will pay for a kid’s rep fees and associated costs
  • $250 will go towards their rep uniforms, so they fit in with everyone else
  • $50 will pay for a pair of new rep shorts

Children like Benji would never have been able to play sport without TeamSports4All, and people like you.
